Blind man bowls perfect game :) May 11, 2008

A 78-year-old legally blind man nicknamed “The Hammer” has bowled a perfect game. Dale Davis of Alta, Iowa, nailed 12 consecutive strikes and reached 300 on Saturday night during league play.

“It’s a great sport. It’s something the young, the old and the handicapped can do,” Davis said Thursday. “I guess I count as the old and handicapped.”

Davis has suffered from macular degeneration, a chronic eye disease, for the past decade. He can’t see out of his left eye and has limited peripheral vision in his right eye.

Davis’ perfect game came at a roll-off to conclude the league season at a four-lane alley in the small northwest Iowa community of about 1,800 people.

Century Lanes owner Clem Ledoux said Davis’ game didn’t draw much attention until he reached 10 strikes. That’s when folks poured out of the bar to watch his final two shots.

Davis, who stands 5-foot-8 and just 115 pounds, threw a “Brooklyn,” where a right-hander strikes the left side of the head pin, for his final strike. The feat brought wild cheers from Davis’ fellow bowlers and onlookers.

“It went down there and somebody hollered ‘Brooklyn!’ It was just a solid sound in the pocket,” said Davis, whose average score is 180. “It was quite a thrill. For just a few minutes there I felt like a pro.”

Davis, who earned his unique moniker as a child from his blacksmith father, moved from California to live with his sister in Iowa shortly after losing sight in his left eye in 1997.

She encouraged him to start bowling again. Davis now bowls twice a week, and his fellow bowlers help him with pin placement and in making sure he picks up the right ball.

Davis said the only time he sees the ball is when he picks it up, but he can usually tell how his throw went by sound. All 12 tosses sounded great to Davis, who bowled the first 300 that Ledoux could recall at the alley since he took over in 1984.

“He’s got good coordination. He’s got good timing,” Ledoux said. “We’ve always kidded him that we think his bowling ball has eyes.”

This image taken from video provided Thursday, May 1, 2008 by KXAS-TV in Fort Worth, Texas, shows part of a check written out for $360 billion. Charles Ray Fuller, who said his girlfriend's mother gave him the check, was arrested last week when he tried to cash it at a Fort Worth bank. Fuller said he wanted to start a record business. Charles Ray Fuller must have been planning one big record company. The 21-year-old North Texas man was arrested last week for trying to cash a $360 billion check, saying he wanted to start a record business. Tellers at the Fort Worth bank were immediately suspicious — perhaps the 10 zeros on a personal check tipped them off.

Fuller, of suburban Crowley, was arrested on a forgery charge. He was released after posting $3,750 bail.

Fuller said his girlfriend’s mother gave him the check to start a record business. But bank employees who contacted the account’s owner said the woman told them she did not give him permission to take or cash the check.

In addition to the forgery count, Fuller was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon and possessing marijuana. Officers reported finding less than two ounces of marijuana and a .25-caliber handgun and magazine in his pockets.

Oh, the things people will do to make it in Guinness. :)

Andrew Dahl inflated 213 balloons within an hour Friday — a feat that has been submitted for review by Guinness World Records.

His father, Doug Dahl, measured the balloons to make sure each was at least 20 centimeters, the minimum diameter, and his mother, Wendy Dahl, kept the tally.

At one point he asked, “Does this count as practicing my trumpet?” His mother replied, “Only if you can play that with your nose.”

Andrew’s first attempt — 184 balloons in February — was rejected because his father tied the balloons. This time he tied them off himself.

Prom Season is upon us April 10, 2008

How would your daughter react if you suggested a duct tape dress? According to the authors of The Duct Tape Books, here are the top ten reasons why you should wear duct tape to the prom!

10. Cheaper than renting a tux or gown.
9. Resistant to punch spills.
8. Prom decorations start falling down? Just peel off part of your outfit and repair ‘em on the spot.
7. The gals’ dads LOVE those hard-to-remove duct tape gowns.
6. As you grow, you don’t have to buy a new gown or tux, you just add more duct tape.
5. With duct tape hosiery, there’s no need to shave your legs for weeks after the prom.
4. The sauna-like nature of duct tape apparel allows you to loose up to 20 pounds in one night.
3. Blame your lack of dancing skills on the stiffness of your duct tape tux.
2. Rip your outfit? Get out your roll and patch it!
1. Couples wearing duct tape tend to “stick together”.

Pizza.com for $2.6 million April 7, 2008

Man, I need to start buying up domains.

Chris Clark, of North Potomac, says he purchased the name for $20 about 14 years ago. He sold it Thursday at an online auction for more than $2.6 million. To celebrate, he and his family held - what else? - a pizza party.

The 43-year-old native of Queens, N.Y., ran a Web site-consulting service in 1994 when he bought pizza.com hoping to persuade a pizzeria to do business with him. But there weren’t any takers, and Clark maintained the Web site as a pizzeria directory ever since. He decided to sell after hearing about other big sales involving domain names.

The bidding opened March 27 at $100 on the Web site Sedo.com. The winner remains anonymous.

Check out this 17 month old reading! March 31, 2008

Elizabeth Barrett is to all appearances your standard 17-month-old girl, complete with wisps of gossamer hair so blond it’s almost white and the unsteady gait that is the definition of a toddler. As her parents and two other adults talk earnestly around her, she paws through a couple of large-format children’s books on a table, blissfully unaware of the conversation around her.

Then TODAY’s Ann Curry holds up a sheet of paper with the word “HAPPY” printed in big, block letters and asks Elizabeth to read it.

“Hap-py,” Elizabeth chirps without hesitation, enunciating each syllable in a bright little voice.

Visit The Today Show to read the rest of the article and to see a video of Elizabeth reading. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/23556514?GT1=43001

Library Cats :) March 30, 2008

Debbie Williams, a media specialist in Alabama, posted on LM_Net about her library cat, Tigger. (He’s the adorable black and white cat posing for his school picture.)  She says at age 13 he mainly sleeps and does not roam the library  too much, but makes quite the fuss when he does! :) He has his own mailbox and the students just adore him. Lou Grant, my cat, would love to come to the library with me but I would not leave him there.  I wonder how Debbie’s school library deals with pet allergies?  Iron Frog Productions has an entire section dedicated to library cats. I’ve had so much fun exploring the various library cats. Wow! Thank you, Debbie!  :) http://www.ironfrog.com/catsmap.html

Flushed Toys Appearing at the Library March 14, 2008

toys.jpg

It appears that Fisher-Price toys are frequently flushed down the toilet. The Roselle Public Library has a collection of flushed toys on display to create public awareness for the costs incurred from flushing toys! I just cannot imagine the poor person who had to clean the toys.  In Naperville, Illinois the public works employees keep toys on the shelves to kids show who tour the plant. Foul!

How?, originally uploaded by Litandmore.

I know of few people who frequent the local video store and it seems that more video stores are closing. Therefore, I read this sign a few times wondering if it actually said: GROWING COMPANY!  Hmm…
